Mediterranea has always not tested products on animals and its products do not contain ingredients tested on animals. According to the European Regulation on cosmetic products, any cosmetic product created after 2013 cannot support animal testing in any way, whether the packaging bears the “cruelty free” certification or not. Since it is therefore prohibited by law, we do not put the cruelty free stamp.
No, generally the ingredients used are not of animal origin, but are of natural or synthetic origin. In very rare cases, you can find substances produced by them such as, for example, beeswax or keratin. For information write to cosmetologa@mediterranea.it .
Vegan cosmetics are those products that do not contain ingredients derived from animals or products generated by them, such as milk, honey or snail slime.
Most of the products in the range are vegan, but there may be some exceptions. The products do not have any Vegan certification. For information write to cosmetologa@mediterranea.it .
According to AIC (Italian Celiac Association), all cosmetics (including lipstick and cocoa butter) should not pose any risk to celiacs and can be used because a cosmetic product is a mixture of substances that act exclusively on the superficial layers of the skin. Some products may contain ingredients containing gluten, such as wheat, so it is best to evaluate each case individually.

Nickel is a metal, it is not an ingredient that is intentionally added to cosmetic products, but for manufacturing reasons any traces of nickel are considered technically unavoidable.
In fact, its presence is permitted by law and it would be wrong to indicate Nickel Free, while it is correct to indicate Nickel Tested. What is common to do is to accompany the wording Nickel tested with the indication of the maximum acceptable threshold (1ppm).
Below are the lines that are tested for the presence of Nickel (<1ppm) and therefore indicated in cases of full-blown allergy to this metal:
- PHARMA Line (excluding CellZero Draining Mud)
- SUN/AFTER SUN line
- M-BABY BIO line
- SOS Sanitizers (Hand sanitizer, liquid sanitizing soap, sanitizing spray)
- SPA (excluding Draining Mud Spa)
- BIO NATURA line
Generally we do not test for heavy metals such as titanium, lead etc. in products.
On some lines, a nickel test is performed to ensure that the concentration is less than <1 ppm.
Parabens are substances used for the preservation of cosmetic products. Although they are safe ingredients and authorized by the legislation on cosmetics, Mediterranea Cosmetics has decided not to use them in its formulations because they are the subject of debates and criticisms.
Mediterranea cosmetics do not have an expiry date, but they last for more than 30 months from the date of production and therefore it is not mandatory to include an expiry date, while it is necessary to indicate the time frame within which to use the product after first opening, the so-called Period After Opening (PAO).
The PAO indicates the period in months within which the opened cosmetic can be used in complete safety. In fact, it is assumed that contact with the external environment can alter the characteristics of the product over time (for example, modify its color, properties and consistency or promote bacterial contamination). The PAO is indicated in all European Union countries with the same symbol: an open jar, present both on the primary container (in direct contact with the cosmetic) and, if applicable, on the case. The duration of the opened product in months is indicated on the jar or next to it, written in number, followed by the letter "M".
Mediterranea Cosmetics products are non-comedogenic, the ingredients are combined together at suitable concentrations to avoid this unpleasant effect.
The key is to know your skin type (normal, dry, sensitive, combination, oily) and choose the right product to ensure good absorption and a pleasant sensation.
Problems for those who suffer from thyroid disorders are related to the possible presence of iodine in cosmetics that could interfere. The products in the range do not contain iodine, so they have no contraindications for those who suffer from thyroid problems. However, without knowing your personal situation in depth, it is advisable to seek the opinion of your doctor by submitting the list of ingredients of the product.
The body of a pregnant woman undergoes many transformations, it is good to take the right precautions and seek the advice of a doctor in case of doubts.
On the face we can recommend using any product in the range, preferring natural lines with ingredients with a high skin tolerability profile (e.g. Vitamin C+ or Bio Natura).
On the body, avoid products against cellulite, products with essential oils and other more aggressive substances.

The tendency today is to speak very well of mineral (or physical) filters and very badly of chemical filters, because chemistry is seen negatively. It would be more correct instead to speak of inorganic (physical/mineral) filters and organic (chemical) filters because both act chemically. Like all substances, they have pros and cons.
However, the consumer can rest assured, because the use of substances is regulated and the SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Union) establishes which ingredients and at what concentrations are safe. Therefore, products that are dangerous for humans cannot be marketed.
Mineral filters reflect the sun's rays, must be applied several times and leave a white film on the skin; chemical filters absorb the energy of radiation and then release it in the form of heat, they are easy to apply.
Mediterranea has chosen to use the best combination of sun filters with the aim of offering effective, safe and pleasant products on the skin. Most of the formulas contain chemical filters. The protection system is stable and complete, with UVA-UVB filters that guarantee a wide level of spectrum coverage.
